Behind the Mic: Our First Podcast with Behind The Design

When the Behind The Design podcast by Camilla Ingle of Unfolded first landed on our radar, we quickly became loyal listeners. There’s something special about hearing our peers share their stories – the challenges, the triumphs, the raw reality of working in this industry. It felt both familiar and refreshing.

So when the invitation came through for us to appear on an episode, we were genuinely flattered. Excited, yes – but also nervous. Neither of us are strangers to conversation, but stepping behind a microphone is a different experience altogether. We knew from the start that if we were going to do this, we wanted to use the opportunity to shine a light on the topics that matter most to us at VICELLO® – and to let listeners see a more candid, real side of us as business owners, designers, makers… and as a husband and wife team.

Across the episode, Camilla guides us into some of the questions we’re most often asked (and some we’re not). We talk about how VICELLO® started, the realities of working together as a married couple, and the misconceptions that often exist when it comes to the journey from concept through to manufacture. For us, it’s about pulling back the curtain and showing the craft, detail and problem-solving that goes into bridging design intent with buildability.

We also touched on themes close to our hearts:

The power of early engagement – how looping us in early can transform the design outcome.

The strength of collaboration – working hand-in-hand with architects, designers, and builders to create something truly resolved.

The role of the joiner – more than ‘just a trade,’ the joiner brings invaluable knowledge, technical insight, and artistry to a project’s success.

It was equal parts nerve-wracking and energising, but the conversation felt like such a natural extension of what we care about – creating spaces that honour design intent, while celebrating the craft and people who bring it to life.

If you’d like to hear the full conversation (and perhaps a little more about what it’s really like running a business as husband and wife), you can tune in now.
